In the Quran we learn what awaits men in Islamic heaven: “We shall marry them to Houris (female fair ones) with wide, lovely eyes.” [Quran 44:54] Could longing to be with houris impel Islamic State members to strive for martyrdom by waging war?
To help us answer this question, let us first consider a hadith and then watch a short video. Here is the hadith:
One man's list of Quranic verses inspiring the Islamic State. Debate Question: after hearing him list each verse, do you agree that that particular verse could have a noted effect in causing the Islamic State to menace other societies?
Having a "beautiful pattern of conduct," (Quran 33:21), Muhammad is the role model for Muslims, including members of the Islamic State. But was Muhammad victorious through Love? No!! As Muhammad himself says:
"I have been made victorious through terror" ((Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 52, Number 220). Can we therefore be surprised when certain Muslims wish to emulate Muhammad, to wage jihad against disbelievers, and thus choose to become Islamic State terrorists?
Debate Question: Was Muhammad himself actually a terrorist?
"The dictionary definition of terrorism is “the calculated use of violence (or the threat of violence) against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or religious or ideological in nature; this is done through intimidation or coercion or instilling fear." Sadly, we are living in an age that we do not need to consult a dictionary to learn the meaning of terrorism. Even our children know about it and are affected by it."
"Islamic terrorism, however, did not start in 9/11 of 2001, nor did it start with the Iranian Islamic Revolution in 1979. Islamic terrorism has its origin in the sayings and examples set by Muhammad."
"In the last ten years of his life, after Muhammad migrated to Medina , he launched no less than 78 raids called qazwa (raid, ambush, sudden attack). Some of these qazwas involved the assassination of one opponent by one or a group of volunteers, and others were carried out by hundreds or thousands of warriors. Nonetheless a common characteristic of all Muhammad’s incursions was that they were done without notice. The enemy was caught off guard without being given the chance to prepare himself or be armed. As such all Muhammad’s victims were civilians." [Read more at: http://www.faithfreedom.org/challenge/terrorist.htm ]
Having sex slaves, concubines, is permissible in Islam. What is striking is the extent to which the Islamic State is willing to go to keep its sex slaves. Enslaved Yazidi women were recently transported by the Islamic State from Mosul, Iraq to Syria.
From a recent article reported by CNN we read:
"Dozens of Yazidi women enslaved by ISIS moved from Mosul, group says"
"Dozens of Yazidi women captured and enslaved by ISIS in 2014 have been moved from the Iraqi city of Mosul to Syria, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights."
"The monitoring group and US military officials have said ISIS militants are fleeing Mosul and heading for Raqqa, Syria, the de facto capital of ISIS, as Iraqi-led forces push to free the key Iraqi city from the terror group."
Debate Question: Muhammad owned female slaves (Quran 33:50) and Allah permits Muslim men to have sex with female slaves (Quran 70:29-30). If Muhammad and Allah had forbade both slavery and intercourse with someone other than one's wife, would the Islamic State be keeping sex slaves today?
The Role of the Quran in Inspiring the Slaughter in Belgium & Elsewhere. In interpreting and following the Quran and the hadiths, can one be led down a wicked road?
In a thought-provoking article, The Quran's deadly role in inspiring Belgian slaughter ( Link: The Quran's deadly role in inspiring Belgian slaughter ) Nabeel Qureshi observes that the last major chapter of the Quran, chapter 9, is the most violent chapter in the entire text. Due to the fact that Muhammad acknowledged that later verses in the Quran can abrogate earlier verses, it is reasonable to conclude that Chapter 9's verses of violence abrogate any earlier verses of reconciliation.
Nabeel Qureshi writes:
Surah 9 is a command to disavow all treaties with polytheists and to subjugate Jews and Christians (9.29) so that Islam may “prevail over all religions” (9.33). It is fair to wonder whether any non-Muslims in the world are immune from being attacked, subdued or assimilated under this command. Muslims must fight, according to this final chapter of the Quran, and if they do not, then their faith is called into question and they are counted among the hypocrites (9.44-45). If they do fight, they are promised one of two rewards, either spoils of war or heaven through martyrdom. Allah has made a bargain with the mujahid who obeys: Kill or be killed in battle, and paradise awaits (9.111).
Turning our attention to the hadiths, they too can favor violence, as we see here:
Sahih al-Bukhari 2787—Allah guarantees that He will admit the Mujahid in His Case into Paradise if he is killed, otherwise He will return him to his home safely with rewards and war booty.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 2796—Narrated Anas: The Prophet said, “A single endeavor (of fighting) in Allah’s cause in the afternoon or in the forenoon is better than all the world and whatever is in it.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 2797—Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet said, . . . “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is! I would love to be martyred in Allah’s Cause and then come back to life and then get martyred, and then come back to life again and then get martyred and then come back to life again and then get martyred.”
Do you want to live in a world where Islam "prevails over all other religions"?
Is the Islamic State not taking "spoils of war," when it takes over oil fields to thereby enrich itself through selling oil, and when it takes captive women as sex slaves?
Are the fighters of ISIS inspired by the paradise the Quran promises martyrs?
Nobel Laureate (Literature) V. S. Naipaul has written a thought-provoking essay on the Islamic State...
The renowned author of Among the Believers and Beyond Belief asserts in his fine essay (link) some noteworthy contentions, some of which can be our Questions for Debate:
"So what impels the tiny minority of young men and women from immigrant communities to volunteer themselves to ‘jihad’ and to almost certain self-destruction, or young women to abscond from their families and from European reality to become jihadi brides?"
"It was an article of 6th and 7th Century Arab faith that everything before it was wrong, heretical," writes Mr. Naipaul. "There was no room for the pre-Islamic past." Can this explain to some notable degree the strong desire the Islamic State has to destroy ancient cultural antiquities and artifacts?
The Islamic State has printed a document with rules that it wants owners of female sex slaves to follow. Do feel free to offer your opinion regarding which of these rules are found in the Quran or the hadiths. (That is, leave a comment).
THE 15 ISIS RULES FOR OWNERS OF FEMALE SEX SLAVES:
First the male captives are separated from the women, and then killed off. Then the women are taken as sex slaves.
This ancient manner of dealing with captives in Islam goes back to the time of Muhammad. Believing that Muhammad could do no wrong, the members of the Islamic State have revived this practice.
That having sex with slaves is permissible in Islam is noted by members of the Islamic State. In the Quran 70:29-30, we read that a good Muslim is among "those who guard their chastity, except with their wives and the captives whom their right hands possess, for then they are not to be blamed." In the video below, we observe at the 34-second mark an Islamic State member reciting verse 70:30: "except with their wives and the captives whom their right hands possess, for then they are not to be blamed."
The Prices of Sex Slaves in the Islamic State. The online newspaper, Bloomberg Business, reports that the Islamic State "is circulating a slave price list for captured women and children"...“The girls get peddled like barrels of petrol”
A United Nations official, Zainab Bangura, reports that “One girl can be sold and bought by five or six different men. Sometimes these fighters sell the girls back to their families for thousands of dollars of ransom.” Readers are encouraged to read more from Bloomberg's fine article at this link.
We can now debate whether certain sayings & actions of Prophet Muhammad guide the Islamic State as it undertakes sex slavery. So our debate question is: do any of the following sayings & actions guide the Islamic State?
The Islamic State has crucified two boys (in June 2015) for eating during daylight instead of fasting while in the month of Ramadan.
One can read more here. Do the following hadiths justify these executions?
1) Abu Ya’la narrated in his Musnad from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The bonds of Islam and the bases of religion are three, on which Islam was founded. Whoever gives up one of them becomes a kafir thereby and it is permissible to shed his blood: the testimony that there is no god but Allaah, the prescribed prayers and fasting Ramadan.”
2} Narrated Ikrima, "Some atheists were brought to Ali and he burnt them. The news of this event, reached Ibn Abbas who said, "If I had been in his place, I would not have burnt them, as Allah's messenger forbade it, saying, "Do not punish anybody with Allah's punishment (fire)." I would have killed them according to the statement of Allah's Messenger, "Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him." [Sahih Bukhari 9:57]
