The Prices of Sex Slaves in the Islamic State.  The online newspaper, Bloomberg Business, reports that the Islamic State "is circulating a slave price list for captured women and children"...“The girls get peddled like barrels of petrol”

A United Nations official, Zainab Bangura, reports that “One girl can be sold and bought by five or six different men. Sometimes these fighters sell the girls back to their families for thousands of dollars of ransom.”  Readers are encouraged to read more from Bloomberg's fine article at this link.
We can now debate whether certain sayings & actions of Prophet Muhammad guide the Islamic State as it undertakes sex slavery.  So our debate question is: do any of the following sayings & actions guide the Islamic State?
  • Not only did Muhammad own slaves (Sahih Bukhari indicates the names of at least two Anjasha & Mi'dam), but he traded them as well.  In Sahih Muslim we read: "Jabir (Allah be pleased with him) reported: "There came a slave and pledged allegiance to Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) on migration; he (the Holy Prophet) did not know that he was a slave. Then there came his master and demanded him back, whereupon Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said: Sell him to me. And he bought him for two black slaves..."
  • The Quran permits a Muslim to have sex with his slave, as it indicates that wise Muslims guard their chastity "except with their wives and those their right hands possess [i.e., slaves]." (Quran 70:29-30).
  • Most tellingly, Muhammad did not angrily command his men not to rape captives when he had the opportunity to do so.  Instead, he merely gave them birth control advice.  "We [Muhammad’s merry men] went out with Allah's messenger on the expedition to the Mustaliq and took captive some excellent Arab women; and we desired them for we were suffering from the absence of our wives, (but at the same time) we also desired ransom for them.So we decided to have sexual intercourse with them but by observing azl" (withdrawing the male sexual organ before emission of semen to avoid conception). But we said:"We are doing an act whereas Allah's messenger [i.e., Muhammad] is amongst us; why not ask him?"So we asked Allah's messenger and he said:"It does not matter if you do not do it, for every soul that is to be born up to the Day of Resurrection will be born". (Sahih Muslim, Vol. 2, #3371).  (We note that at least some of the female captives were being held for ransom, which is exactly what the Islamic State is doing now with at least some of its female captives).
  • What is most ominous is the high price for captives under the age of ten.  We know that Muhammad married his third wife (Aisha) when she was six years old.

The Islamic State has crucified two boys (in June 2015) for eating during daylight instead of fasting while in the month of Ramadan.

One can read more here.  Do the following hadiths justify these executions?
1) Abu Ya’la narrated in his Musnad from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The bonds of Islam and the bases of religion are three, on which  Islam was founded. Whoever gives up one of them becomes a kafir thereby and it is permissible to shed his blood: the testimony that there is no god but Allaah, the prescribed prayers and fasting Ramadan.”

2} Narrated Ikrima, "Some atheists were brought to Ali and he burnt them. The news of this event, reached Ibn Abbas who said, "If I had been in his place, I would not have burnt them, as Allah's messenger forbade it, saying, "Do not punish anybody with Allah's punishment (fire)." I would have killed them according to the statement of Allah's Messenger, "Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him."
[Sahih Bukhari 9:57]

The Influence of Muhammad and the early Muslims upon the manner in which members of the Islamic State treat captive women.

Muhammad is considered the role model for Muslims -- "Certainly you have in the Messenger of Allah an excellent exemplar for him who hopes in Allah and the latter day and remembers Allah much."  (Quran 33:21).  So did Muhammad always ensure that captive women were treated in an exemplary way?
Con
sider the following hadith:
"We [Muhammad’s merry men] went out with Allah's messenger on the expedition to the Mustaliq and took captive some excellent Arab women; and we desired them for we were suffering from the absence of our wives, (but at the same time) we also desired ransom for them.  So we decided to have sexual intercourse with them but by observing azl" (withdrawing the male sexual organ before emission of semen to avoid conception).  But we said: "We are doing an act whereas Allah's messenger [i.e., Muhammad] is amongst us; why not ask him?" So we asked Allah's messenger and he said: "It does not matter if you do not do it, for every soul that is to be born up to the Day of Resurrection will be born". (Sahih Muslim, Vol. 2, #3371)
Tellingly, the role model of the Muslims, Muhammad, does not exclaim:
“DO NOT FORNICATE WITH THE CAPTIVES!”

Nor does he exclaim to the married men: “DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY WITH THE CAPTIVES!!”

Finally, we note that he does not yell: “DO NOT RAPE THE CAPTIVES!!!”
So given that the role model of the Muslims, Muhammad, had no problem with female captives being raped, can we truly be surprised that the Islamic State has no problem with the rape of captives either?

Yet MORE Evidence that the Islamic State Obeys Allah's Command in the Quran: "Fight the Christians and Jews until they pay tribute [Jizya] and feel subdued." [Quran 9:29]. ISIS cites this Command in Murdering dozens of Ethiopian Christians...

The New York Times reports on the murders:  "the [ISIS] video cuts to the far longer processional scenes depicting rows of African migrants escorted through the desert and along the beach. For those who refuse Islam or jizya, the narrator says, “We owe nothing except the edge of the sword.”

The Islamic State, Muhammad, and Prisoners of War

3/2/2015

The role model for all Muslims, Muhammad, made clear that he did not like having to retain prisoners of war. Sunan Abu Dawud reports: "Narrated Atiyyah al-Qurazi: I was among the [male] captives of Banu Qurayzah. They (the Companions) examined us, and those who had begun to grow pubic hair were killed, and those who had not were not killed. I was among those who had not grown hair."  Several hundred of the Banu Qurazyah captives were beheaded by Muhammad and his men.
Muhammad's attitude toward retaining prisoners of war can be found in the Quran:   "It is not for any prophet to have captives until he hath made slaughter in the land." (Quran 8:67)
Consequently, when the Islamic State murders Iraqi prisoners of war, or beheads Kurdish prisoners of war, or burns a Jordanian combat pilot to death, we cannot be completely surprised.
Our Debate Question is:  "Is it moral or immoral to murder prisoners of war?"

An ISIS member tells what Quranic commands guide the Islamic State:

In an interview with the journal, Spiegel Online (ISIS Link) , ISIS member Abu Sattar indicates some of the commands from the Quran that guide the Islamic State (ISIS).   He states:  "It is every Muslim’s duty to fight those of a different belief until only Allah is worshipped around the world. Everybody has the opportunity to accept Allah and to change to the right path. (Recited in Arabic from the Koran, 5. Sura, Verse 33) “The recompense of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and do mischief in the land is only that they shall be killed or crucified or their hands and their feet be cut off on the opposite sides, or be exiled from the land.”  Certainly the fondness of crucifixion by ISIS members confirms the importance of this verse.
But Mr. Sattar also mentions the duty of every Muslim to fight those of a different belief until only Allah is worshiped.  He clearly must be referring to this command from the Quran:
Quran (8:39) - "And fight with them until there is no more fitna (disorder, unbelief) and religion should be only for Allah."  Moreover, we can surmise that ISIS is also influenced by this hadith:  Narrated Anas bin Malik:Allah's Apostle said, "I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.' And if they say so, pray like our prayers, face our Qibla and slaughter as we slaughter, then their blood and property will be sacred to us and we will not interfere with them except legally and their reckoning will be with Allah." Narrated Maimun ibn Siyah that he asked Anas bin Malik, "O Abu Hamza! What makes the life and property of a person sacred?" He replied, "Whoever says, 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah', faces our Qibla during the prayers, prays like us and eats our slaughtered animal, then he is a Muslim, and has got the same rights and obligations as other Muslims have." (Bukhari, book 1, vol. 8, #387)
With regards to non-Muslims, Mr. Sattar has this to say, from Quran 4:89:   “They (the Unbelievers) wish that you reject Faith as they have rejected Faith, and thus that you all become equal. So take not protectors or friends from them till they emigrate in the Way of Allah. But if they turn back from Islam, take hold of them and kill them wherever you find them and take neither protectors nor friends nor helpers from them.”
Our Debate Question is:  "Most Muslims choose to ignore the commands given in the Quran to fight disbelievers until religion is all for Allah.  What logical reasons would they give to ISIS members explaining why ISIS too should also ignore these commands?"

In Quran 9:29 this command is given: "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day...until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued." ISIS has set up offices for Jizya collection from nonMuslims...

Our Debate Question is:  What is the proper way to obey the command of Allah cited in Quran 9:29?

When the members of the Islamic State use slaves for sex, what Islamic justification do they provide? Quranic verses they likely use include 70:29-30 "And those who preserve their chastity, except with THOSE THEIR RIGHT HANDS POSSESS."

Muhammad said "I have been made victorious with terror (cast in the hearts of the enemy), & while I slept, the keys of the world's treasures were brought & put in my hand." (Sahih Bukhari 4:52.220). Does ISIS likewise seek victory through terror?

It can be argued that the fondness of the Islamic State for beheading people can be traced to Quran 47:4 ("When you encounter the unbelievers on the battlefield, strike off their heads until you have crushed them completely").  Do you agree?

In addition to Quran 47:4, this hadith could well have had an impact on the tendency of the Islamic State (ISIS) to behead people:  "The Jews were made to come down, and Allah's Messenger imprisoned them.  The the Prophet went out into the marketplace of Medina (it is still its marketplace today) and he had trenches dug in it.  He sent for the Jewish men and HAD THEM BEHEADED in those trenches.  They were brought out to him in batches.  They numbered 800 to 900 boys and men. (al-Tabari, vol. 8, p. 35).
