One of Muhammad's daughters, Fatima, had a husband, Ali, who wanted to have another wife. Not surprisingly, Fatima did not like this; various hadiths record that she was "vexed" and "bothered" by "uncontrollable jealousy" as a result of Ali's intention, feeling "severe anguish." Muhammad did not like to see his daughter so unhappy, so he told Ali not to marry again, unless he divorced Fatima. Being obedient to Muhammad like a good Muslim, Ali did not marry again until after Fatima died.
It was good that Muhammad was so compassionate to his daughter. But our Debate Question is "Why was he not compassionate to his own wives, subjecting them to the jealousy inherent in polygyny?
Why when having multiple wives did Muhammad consistently favor his child bride, Aisha, more than the others? Why did one of Muhammad's wives, Zainab bint Jahsh, feel compelled to use harsh words saying, "Your wives request you TO TREAT THEM and the daughter of Ibn Abu Quhafa ON EQUAL TERMS." Evidently, foreseeable problems intrinsic to a polygamous marriage could not be successfully resolved even by Muhammad.
Finally, why did Muhammad not extend his compassion for his daughter to all Muslim being subjected to polygynous marriages?
