Now often the month of Ramadan [which is based on a lunar calendar] does not arrive in deep summer or deep winter, and consequently, neither the midnight son nor the polar nights would bedevil the Muslim living in the Arctic. However, on occasion Ramadan does arrive during the deep summer when the sun never goes down, in which case this Muslim must consider learning to love to be famished:
Ramadan can also occur in deep winter, during the midst of "polar nights." In this case, the Muslim living in the Arctic does not have to fast at all.
Muslims in the Arctic attempt to solve the problem they can face during certain Ramadans by pretending that they live somewhere else. Yet how satisfactory is doing this? One could reasonably argue that knowing that the amount of daylight people have is not uniform throughout the world, Allah should have just set a time duration of say 10 hours everywhere for fasting. One wonders though, "Did Muhammad know that the amount of daylight available for all of earth's inhabitants is not uniform across the earth?"
