In regions of the Arctic there are times in summer when the sun never goes down ("midnight sun") and times in winter where the sun never rises ("polar nights"). When there is no dawn and no sunset, how do Muslims in the Arctic know when to pray? Why did Allah not give everyone specific prayer times, so that they do not have to pretend that they live somewhere else?

Now often the month of Ramadan [which is based on a lunar calendar] does not arrive in deep summer or deep winter, and consequently, neither the midnight son nor the polar nights would bedevil the Muslim living in the Arctic. However, on occasion Ramadan does arrive during the deep summer when the sun never goes down, in which case this Muslim must consider learning to love to be famished: |
