![]() The smiling girl on the left, Roshan Qasem, age 11 with a fiance five times her age, before joining his household as his 2nd wife; the girl in the middle, Ghulan Haider, also 11, had to quit school upon engagement to the 40-year old man; six months of marriage did not bring a smile to 13-year old Majabin Mohammed (on right), sitting with her 45-year old husband. Did these girls know fully what marriage is about before their engagements and weddings? Did Aisha know as a six-year old girl? Had these girls long loved their future spouses before the wedding, or instead, at the wedding, "her silence is her consent," as the Muslims say?
What do we suppose the future holds for Roshan, Ghulan, and Majabin? With regards to Ghulan, she had wanted to become a teacher before her engagement somehow meant having to leave school. Can we remain optimistic that she will become a teacher one day? Why is it that the child marriages of Islam always involve little girls and not little boys?1/22/2015 Consider the following hadith: A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported: "Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) married me when I was six years old, and I was admitted to his house when I was nine years old." [Sahih Muslim, 8:3310]. She was still playing with dolls at the time of her marriage. When Muhammad died, she was only 18, so she spent decades as an unmarried childless widow. Besides spinsterhood, what are some of the other consequences of marrying little girls much younger than you? The Quranic verse 2:228 indicates that after a divorce occurs, the divorced woman must wait at least 3 menstrual periods before remarriage. But as this verse failed to consider females who do not menstruate, Muhammad revealed verse 65:4, providing the rules for women too old for menstruation, GIRLS TOO YOUNG FOR MENSTRUATION, and women not menstruating due to pregnancy. Verse 65:4 states: "And if you are in doubt as to the prescribed period for such of your women as have despaired of monthly courses, then know that the prescribed period for them is three months, and also FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT HAVE THEIR MONTHLY COURSES YET. And as for those who are with child, their period shall be until they are delivered of their burden. And whoso fears Allah, He will provide facilities for him in his affair."
Our debate question is then: "If A GIRL IS MARRIED BEFORE REACHING MENARCHE, do you truly think that no physical or psychological problems would ever arise for her in life due to the marriage? |
